16TH ANNUAL NCAA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT CONTEST
To: Statistics students, staff, faculty
From: John Boyer
The NCAA basketball tournament begins this coming Thursday. If you are a basketball fan, then a contest is being held to demonstrate your basketball knowledge. If you are not a basketball fan, then a contest is being held to allow you to demonstrate how little the self-proclaimed “basketball fans” know about basketball. The rules are simple, but most importantly IT’S FREE!
CONTEST INSTRUCTIONS
1. Select as many teams as you wish from the following list, but the total cost must be less than or equal to 100. For example, you might pick all the #1 seeds -
2. Write your choices on the accompanying entry form and return it to me or to my mailbox in the Statistics Department office or you can e-mail me your picks. This must be accomplished by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14th.

This contest was invented by Dr. James Stapleton of Michigan State University in 1986. In recent years, a winning score has typically been 18-20 wins. We (the Statistics Department at KSU) compete annually with the Michigan State department (from which Drs. Boyer and Song received their degrees) for bragging rights.
You can find a complete bracket at a variety of sites in newspapers and online. The tournament runs for three weeks, and concludes with the championship game on Monday, April 2nd.
This is a departmental tradition – you don’t have to know anything about basketball to participate –otherwise Dr. Boyer would never be allowed in.
